Hong Kong's Famous Egg Tarts (Tai Cheong Bakery)
As quoted from wikipedia,
"Egg tarts, custard tarts, or egg custard tarts are a kind of pastry popular in many parts of the world, particularly in Chinese and Western European cuisines. The tarts consist of an outer pastry crust that is filled with egg custard and baked."
Note: Traditional Egg Tarts are not to be confused with "Portuguese Egg Tarts" which have a creme brulee and caramel like top and is sweeter in comparison.
Egg Tarts originated from Hong Kong, made popular by the "Cha Chaan Tengs" and "Yum Cha/Dim Sum" places. And so, it makes sense one of the egg tarts you will have (if not the best) will be from Hong Kong.
Tai Cheong Bakery, located at 32, Lyndhurst Terrace, Central Hong Kong has been in business for over half a century and is one of the most well known places in Hong Kong to have egg tarts. The egg tarts, not just favoured by locals, were also the favourite of Ex British Governer of Hong Kong, Chris Patten.
The highlght of the egg tarts served here is the soft egg filling. Unlike usual egg tarts, the filling here is extremely soft and it actually flows into your mouth as you eat it. The texture and the fragrance from the egg filling will definitely leave you wanting more. The pastry is also consistent but may break easily.
The Egg Tarts cost 5HKD each.
